Frequently asked questions
What is a font license?
When you purchase fonts, what you get (in legal terms) is a ‘license’ to use them for specific purposes and on specific platforms. The type of license you purchase determines the purposes and extents to which the fonts can be used. If any of these change, you will need to update and buy the appropriate license. For example, if you buy a license for using the fonts in your printed posters (Desktop license) and subsequently need to use it for an app or website, you need to buy a different license (App license, Web license) as your previous license does not cover using the fonts in apps or websites.
How many licenses do I need?
If the fonts are to be installed on your system, each device where the fonts may be available for use counts as one. You will need a license to cover the total number of devices accordingly. For using our fonts on websites, please select the Web license and the approximate number of monthly pageviews. For using our fonts in apps, please select the App license based on the number of apps where the fonts will be used. Our basic Desktop license covers up to 3 personal computers or devices, Web license covers 10,000 monthly pageviews – this is the minimum possible purchase tier and anything less is covered within this option.
What licenses can be purchased directly from this website?
Desktop licenses, Web licenses, and App licenses for specified number of devices or pageviews or apps, respectively, can be purchased directly from this website. Please get in touch with us to enquire about Broadcasting licenses, Game embedding licenses, Business licenses, or Custom licenses based on any specific requirements.
What can/can’t I do with Desktop License?
With a Desktop license, you get a perpetual license to use the fonts on a certain number of devices individually or within your organisation. You may only install the fonts on devices up to the number your order summary states. You may not install or share the fonts on any additional devices or transfer the font files to other devices. Providing the fonts to any third parties who do not have a license for use is prohibited. You may embed the fonts into PDF or other files in a secured mode provided that the document itself is not a commercial product. For example, if you are creating an app, you will need to purchase an additional App license. Embedding the fonts in any other formats is prohibited under this license.
You will need an extended Desktop license if you want to use the fonts in a logo or corporate identity. You will also need an extended license if you want to use the fonts on an organisation’s social media channels (i.e. Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook etc). For acquiring an extended or custom license please contact us.
Under no circumstances are you allowed to convert the fonts to formats other than those provided on purchase. You may not use any font manipulation program or attempt to modify the fonts to create derivative or substitute versions of the fonts. Under no circumstances are you allowed to modify, adapt, translate, reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble or copy the source code or the designs which are the intellectual property of Typeland.
What can/can’t I do with Web License?
With a Web license, you purchase a perpetual license to use the fonts for websites under your and/or your organisation’s control. All fonts must be stored using an online storage to serve websites for which you or your organisation have sole administrative access to (aside from the owner of the server). You are allowed to use the fonts on any number of domains provided together they do not exceed the monthly pageviews that your order summary states.
You may use the fonts on websites using the CSS @font-face method but you may not embed the fonts in any other format or in any other way. The license is determined by the number of pageviews per month which must not be exceeded. You must upgrade your license as the monthly pageviews increase over time. You will be expected to record or have access to records of monthly pageviews by using any analytics tool for websites. On written requests, you may be required to provide, without undue delay, screenshots of your analytics tool to prove that the number of monthly pageviews is below the limit set by the license you purchased. Modifying the fonts under this license is prohibited.
What can/can’t I do with App License?
With an App license, you purchase a license to use the fonts to style live text in applications created by you or your organisation. You must inform Typeland of the applications upon purchasing the license. The license is specific to the number of applications noted in your order summary.
You may not embed the fonts into any other format or in any other way under this license. You may not use the fonts with the CSS @font-face method or create ‘virtual terminals’ or ‘servers’. You may not embed the fonts into computer files other than the application files. You may not use the fonts to create or save raster or vector images or documents in your apps. If you distribute an app on multiple software platforms (iOS, Android, etc), each version can be regarded as a single app. Modifying the fonts under this license is prohibited.
What can/can’t I do with Trial Fonts License?
Trial Fonts may be used for internal evaluation purposes only, not for any public use. You may use Trial Fonts to create mock-ups, visualisations for presentation within your organisation. You may install the Trial Fonts on as many devices within your organisation as required for evaluation purposes only. You may use the Fonts for presentations to clients to demonstrate potential use. You must not use Trial Fonts for any commercial purposes. This includes, but is not limited to, any consumer or customer facing applications or business, any commissions or sales which include use of the Fonts. You must not distribute the Fonts to any person or external entity. If you wish to use the Trial Fonts for commercial purposes, you must purchase a separate appropriate License from our website for the full version of the Fonts for use on Desktop, Web, and/or App, or get in touch with Typeland for a Custom License.
Do you sell custom licenses for specific requirements not covered on the website?
Yes we do. Please get in touch to discuss your requirements for purchasing a different license.
Do you undertake commissions for brand new typefaces or logotypes?
Yes we undertake custom projects for any specific requirements that you may have, please get in touch with us to discuss further. We offer original and proprietary typefaces for clients with custom projects: these are made-to-order unique solutions for distinctiveness and full ownership. We also offer our retail fonts modified to suit your needs: these are solutions for quicker turnaround based on existing fonts in our library, with flexible licensing models to suit different budgets. We specialise in crafting multi-script additions for your existing fonts: helping you with global coverage and reliable quality assurance in design and production.
Where can I buy Typeland fonts? Are they available from other sellers or distributors?
All our retail typefaces are available exclusively from our website. Most common license types (Desktop, Web, App) for small to medium volumes can be purchased directly through this website. The process is quick and simple, plus multiple license types can be combined easily at the same time as required (for example if you want fonts for both print and web use). For any custom needs, larger volumes, or different coverage not included in the purchasing options here, please get in touch with us to discuss your requirements.
At checkout which option should I choose in the field ‘This license is for’?
Please note that the purchasing for organisation/company at checkout is for designers, studios/agencies, and web/app developers to purchase the fonts on their client’s behalf. Employees of a company purchasing license for the company’s work should also use this option using the appropriate parameters for Desktop, Web, or App options. Under no circumstance should designers, studios/agencies and developers profit in any way from this font license purchase or use them for individual purposes. The font licensing should always be owned by the client as the end user. If both studio/agency and a client need to use and install the desktop fonts within their company, then separate Desktop Licenses are required for each party.
What are my payment options?
We accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express for online purchases, and these are processed securely through Stripe. For large volume purchases, we may also be able to accept direct bank transfers to a UK bank account, you will need to get in touch with us to arrange such payments.
Are the card payments on this website secure?
Yes. We accept card payments via our third-party payment processor, Stripe. Your payment details are not visible to Typeland and all payments are securely handled. Stripe is certified as a PCI Level 1 Service Provider, all transactions are secure and no card data is stored at our end. For details, please see: https://stripe.com/docs/security/stripe
When will I receive my fonts, and in what file formats?
You will receive font files for the license(s) you purchase as an immediate download once the payment is successful. The font files will be in OpenType Format (OTF) and TrueType Format (TTF) for Desktop licenses, WOFF & WOFF2 (Web Open Font Format) for Web licenses, and OpenType Format (OTF) and TrueType Format (TTF) for App licenses. It is your responsibility to purchase the appropriate license as well as the related file formats as described above. Please note that licenses and formats cannot be used interchangeably and the appropriate license is required for each use scenario and/or platform.
How do I access the fonts I purchased?
On purchasing a license, you get an immediate download with font files. You can also access your order and font download at any time through your account on our website. Sign in using the email you used to make the purchase and go to My orders > View details > Download order.
Can I cancel my purchase? What’s your return policy?
Please note that all purchases are final and we cannot refund money on font license purchases. By purchasing fonts on this website you acknowledge that Typeland cannot be held liable for any specific usage/platform requirements and no returns are accepted under any conditions. Please ensure you buy the correct license type for your intended use case (Desktop, Web, or App) as the licenses cannot be used interchangeably. If you need to upgrade the license you purchased, and/or use our fonts in any special scenarios, larger volumes, or for different coverage needs not included in the purchasing options here, please get in touch with us to discuss the specifics.
Can I upgrade my font license to include additional users?
Yes, you can add additional users at any time. All upgrades will take into account your previous purchase and deduct the amount already paid. Please contact us for more information at any time you want to upgrade your license.
Do you offer volume discounts?
We offer three kinds of volume discounts:
- Multi-user discounts. Font licenses are priced based on the number of devices, apps where they will be used, or monthly pageviews. As the number of devices/apps/pageviews increases, the cost of the license decreases significantly.
- Package discounts. Many of our larger font families are offered at a discount when purchased together as packages. The percentage of discount offered and the reduced total is shown clearly when you select license types and the relevant package.
- Special licenses. Licenses for larger volumes and use scenarios (that are not covered by the available options on our website) will be quoted for individually and will offer substantial discounts. For more information, please email us with your specific requirements.
I want the font for my workplace/studio/office, how many licenses do I need?
If you work in a studio or an office where the fonts may be installed and used on any system (even if not immediately), you will need to purchase a license for the total number of devices that will have access to the font. For example, in a 5-person studio or department where people may work on shared projects, even if not immediately, you need to account for all devices where the font may be used. If after purchasing a license, you find out that more devices require the font to be installed (for example, two years down the line, with more employees, or a new department etc), you will need to upgrade the license for the appropriate number of devices.
Please note that a ‘device’ covers a broad range of machines, not limited to desktops and laptop computers, tablets, or mobile phones. Embedding our fonts on specific devices, including but not limited to eBook readers, mobile phones, and gaming devices requires a special license, as does their use on servers.
I’m working on a project for a client, who should buy the license, client or designer?
As a designer, when you buy a license you can use the fonts for any number of projects, within the provisions of the license. However, you cannot give the fonts to clients or outside parties involved in the projects. They will need to buy a separate license to use the fonts on their systems. You can always send non-editable files (such as PDFs or image files) using the fonts that you have licensed. Providing font files to clients or contractors who do not have a font license themselves constitutes a breach of the license.
If you are designing a logo or identity system using our fonts, you will need to purchase an extended license. If you are designing for a company or organisation who will be using our fonts in any form subsequent to your design work, such as in their corporate material, social media channels etc, then they will need to purchase an additional license for themselves based on the appropriate desktop and web use.
It is your responsibility to make the company/organisation aware of this requirement. Without a license to cover the full extent of the use of our fonts, both you and the company/organisation may be liable for damage claims for unauthorised use.
Do I need multiple licenses if my studio/company has multiple locations?
If your studio/company has multiple branches/locations you will need to purchase a license covering the total number of devices across all locations. The font license applies to the number of devices linked to the purchaser/entity licensing the fonts (as named in the license), irrespective of locations. The licensed fonts can only be installed on the specified number of devices or computers owned by the person/entity to whom the license is issued.
Can I share the fonts with a subcontractor?
No, you are not allowed to share the fonts that you license with any third parties. Subcontractors count as separate end-users, they will need their own license.
I would like to use your font to make a logo. Do I need to pay for additional licensing?
An extended license is required to use Typeland typefaces or single glyphs in logo design, corporate identities, sales products, or if the usage of the font adds value to a commercial product deriving in whole or in part from the alphabet design. Please get in touch with us prior to using the fonts in logos, corporate identities, and products to ensure you are not in breach of the terms defined in your existing license.
Can I modify or add characters to your existing retail fonts?
No, our standard licenses do not allow licensees to make any alterations to the font software or character outlines. We reserve the right to any modifications or extensions. Standard licenses do not allow you or anyone else on your behalf to make derivatives, modified versions, or customisations of any part of our typefaces, including individual glyphs, outline derivations, and or any specific feature of the fonts. Please contact us for any custom requirements or additions to our fonts, or to purchase a custom license for your requirements.
How do I install the fonts?
Extract/unzip the folder you download. Windows users: right-click on the file and click install. MacOS X users: double click the font file and select install.
What if the fonts don’t work as I expected or if I can’t use them in a specific software?
Our fonts are rigorously tested to ensure quality and performance across most common applications and platforms currently in use. Major problems are highly unlikely, but all licensed fonts are provided on an ‘as is’ basis. We cannot be held responsible for the correct implementation and performance of fonts on third-party software under any circumstance, and cannot ensure perfect functionality on every operating system or platform. We will be happy to help with significant and genuine technical issues that we are able to fix, but without any warranties or liabilities.
What languages do your retail fonts support?
You can find the full list of supported languages in the PDF specimen for each font. Our retail fonts do not have default Greek, Cyrillic, or Vietnamese support. We can provide additional language coverage by commission or as per custom requirements. Please contact us for a quote if you would like us to extend our retail fonts to cover a different language or script.
